Split Free · Last updated 28 September 2026
Split Free helps friends share expenses. Because a group's expenses must be visible to everyone in it, that data is stored in the cloud. This page explains exactly what is stored and who can see it.
Signing in
You sign in with Google. The app receives your name, email address and a Google account ID. Your name and email are shown to people in groups you join, so they know who you are.
What is stored in the cloud
- Groups you create or join, their members, invitations, expenses, payments and comments.
- A notification token for your phone, and the list of groups you muted, so notifications reach the right device.
This data is kept in Google Firebase (Cloud Firestore, Mumbai region). Security rules let only members of a group read or change that group. A small server on Cloudflare sends notifications and handles joining, leaving and deleting accounts; it does not keep its own copy of your data.
Optional Google Drive backup
The app can back up your groups to a hidden app folder in your own Google Drive using the drive.appdata permission. It cannot see, open or change any of your other Drive files. You can delete the backup in Account → Backup settings.
Use of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Group photos
When a group is named after a place, the app looks up a public photo of that place on Wikipedia. Only the place name is sent.
Sharing
No ads, no analytics, no tracking. Your data is never sold or shared with anyone other than the members of your groups and the services above that run the app.
Deleting your data
Account → Delete account removes you from every group, deletes your profile and your sign-in, and deletes your Drive backup. Expenses you shared with others stay in those groups so their balances remain correct.
